In this graph, I show the cumulative percent increase of selected UC Full Time Equivalent (FTE) occupational groups and UC student tuition since 1998.
From 1998-2014:
Tenure Faculty increased by 26%.
Non-Tenure Faculty & Lecturers increased by 80%.
Senior Administration and Management increased by 163%.
Undergraduate Student Fees & Tuition increased by 133%.
There is no doubt that student fees in all the UC campuses have increased dramatically, but in the same period the UC has not invested very much in tenure track faculty positions. Instead, the UC is hiring more non-tenure track faculty and lecturers to take up more student instruction. Additionally, the UC is also hiring more senior administrative and management positions, which play very little role in student instruction. It is hypocritical for the UC to publicly commit itself to improving quality of education while hiring more senior administrators and fewer tenure track faculty.
