Who are SCALE at UCLA?
We are the Student Collective Against Labor Exploitation at the University of California at Los Angeles. When someone says that they became rich through hard work, we ask, "whose?" We are the adherents of the insane belief that humans have a right to proper nutrition, medicine, education, and all other aspects of a healthy life. We like to chalk.
Here, we apply our values of equity and liberty within our organizational structure. So, keeping in line with the belief that it is indeed possible to run a club without bosses or presidents, we have no bosses or presidents. Although this does not guarantee that endorsing other organizations or issuing communiqués will proceed as quickly as a dictator stamping a proposal, our commitment to methods of group consensus allow our members to be part of a community where hierarchy and oppression aren't taken for granted as some eternal Natural Order.
That being said, although SCALE is politically oriented, we do not collectively embrace any one political ideology. Some of us are socialists, some anarchists, some communists, and perhaps even some *shudder* liberals. Quite a different spectrum from your typical 'Murican "Republican or Democrat" state-approved range of discussion, isn't it? What we do all agree upon is to fight against racism, against sexism, against homophobia and transphobia, against anti-semitism and Islamophobia, against capitalism, and for environmental justice, for food justice, for women's liberation, for queer liberation, and, as our name suggests, for worker's rights.
The best thing about all this is that we're open to work with and include all kinds of different folks who have a sense of justice! While making sure we organize within safe spaces, we cast our net wide open, to issues of labor exploitation and all related (and there's lots related), engaging in the welfare of all laboring communities in the Los Angeles area and beyond. So, feel free to send us an email with any questions, attend our meetings, join our mailing list (by requesting it in an email), come out to our events, and keep fighting the good fight!
